Abstract
This project focuses on the design, construction, and testing of a subsonic open-circuit wind tunnel for aerodynamic experiments. Wind tunnels are essential tools in aerodynamics, enabling the study of airflow over objects in a controlled environment. The main objectives of this project were to design a low-cost, functional wind tunnel that can achieve uniform airflow suitable for educational and basic experimental purposes. Key engineering considerations included aerodynamic efficiency, material selection, structural integrity, and cost-effectiveness. The design incorporates essential components such as a centrifugal blower, diffuser, settling chamber with screens and honeycomb, contraction cone, and an open test section. The diffuser and settling chamber work together to condition the airflow, while the contraction cone ensures a uniform, accelerated flow into the test section.
Environmental, economic, and practical constraints were considered by using accessible materials like wood and steel, combined with cost-effective flow conditioning elements. The tunnel’s performance was analyzed using anemometric measurements, revealing consistent airflow suitable for basic testing. Despite challenges such as noise, vibration, and minor flow asymmetries, the tunnel met its primary objectives. Potential applications include aerodynamic education, model testing, and further experimental research. The report also outlines proposed enhancements for future iterations, including improved flow visualization and precision instrumentation.
