Abstract

Renewable energy, just as fossil energy, is used for electricity production and heat production. Renewable energy implementation has been developing rapidly in recent years. Wind, water, and solar power can supply all of the world’s energy by 2030. The aim of the study is to help in meeting challenges facing the world today production of renewable energy. This study consists of designing and testing the performance of a new type Savonius (IceWind) Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. In order to do so, first a literature review is carried out to understand the theory behind wind turbines and to understand the different types and characteristics of VAWT. IceWind design is reverse engineered from promotional material. SolidWorks program is then used to make IceWind rotor. Wind tunnel open type has been used to understand the characteristics of the IceWind rotor. Physical models of both designs (two and three blades) are built to physically test and compare their performance under different conditions. From the different steps, we concluded that IceWind does show a good performance.

 

Conclusion

The goal of this study was to test the performance of an innovative design of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (IceWind) proposed by an Iceland based startup. IceWind turbine with two blades and three blades was tested experimentally. Simplified model using readily available materials was built. The design was put inside the wind tunnel operated under five different wind speeds. Angular velocity and time is measured to calculate the acceleration. Static torque is measured to calculate static torque and power coefficients.

It can be concluded from the experiments results that two bladed rotor is more effective with higher power coefficient compared to three bladed rotor.
